The Damnedest Thing

Good Morning,

It has been an action packed Spring here in the Bay Area, what with the world on the eve of destruction and all. But here are some sketches that accumulated in the off season;

FitVerse

Hey all!

It's turning out to be a great late summer here in the city. Keeping busy, here's a re-do of the original FitVerse illustration,

There's such a variety of projects coming up in the next few months, so check in when you can!

New pictures!

August has been a rockin' month on this end. I have a big project slate made for myself all through the holidays. Priority number one is getting a new By George store going! That's right, you'll soon be able to buy illustrations on a variety of variatables. Here are some samples;

Cashing Out, Cashing In

Well, first and foremost, I officially graduated-
Photobucket

Grad weekend was a grand time had by all! Family shenanigans and well wishes started the summer off on a great foot!

However, being as busy as I have been, new stuff is churning a little slower than I would like, but thank goodness for people keeping me on my toes.

Bay Area filmmaker Gairo Cueves was looking for some web art for his new production website, Loser Status. As per one of Gairo's original concepts, I threw together this;

Turns out, he was looking for something simpler, which means I got to have fun with stick figures. I had an art class once that claimed your should be able to tell any and every emotion with stick figures, using body language and spacing. So this ended up being a fun exercise in line economics!

Also, my newly minted Californian brother, Charlie, was looking for something to commemorate his friend's big surfing trip...now, I'm not exactly excellent in the realm of caricatures, but I'll let you be the judge;

Take Care, Michael Turner

Photobucket

For those of you not familiar with his comics work, Michael Turner is the fantastic cover artist of CIVIL WAR and various other titles, and creator of the gorgous FATHOM series. He died this week of cancer at age 37.

I loved his art. Everything he did was enthusiastic, exciting and bold At the same time, his slightly anime-ish features let him add intense exaggeration that really just made the characters pop. I have been influenced by his style, and I have been blown away by his career. Anyone looking to pick up some of his work, Top Cow Publishing has a "Best Of" anthology out, and I would also recommend DC's Supergirl trade, where he draws every beautiful woman in the DC Universe.

Ending Up

Good Morning Friends!

It's been about a month since I've been able to toss anything up here, but don't think I haven't been busy! I formally graduated from SFSU in May, a long weekend which included 10 visiting family members, multiple MUNI guffaws and a surplus of sangria.

But it's good to be back, so let's start with some works in progress;

Since some have asked what exactly "line tooling" is, here's a good example;

Line Tooling is a technique I learned from Leapfrog Animators last summer. Essentially, you just trace your image and fill it all in. Using a mouse, no tablet or other such gadgets. It's easier than it sounds, and with it you can get some cool curves and angles.

These were all made with the same method;

In the pursuit of bringing together full illustrations, this is the opening sketch for a piece I'm going to color and clean up.
I call it "Meeting your Future Self at a Dive Bar"

At this moment, I'm about 50 pages shy of finishing John Kennedy Toole's "A Confederacy of Dunces". Hands down one of my new instant favorites- funniest book on my shelf. I sat down with the book on my brain and hashed out what I thought the characters should look like...Photobucket

Nashville Sketches

So I decided to spend my 23rd birthday at the annual KFOG Kaboom! As I waited in line for the second $8 beer of the night, the man behind me looked at me, and with a sure breath said "I sat next to you on the flight from Charlotte last week." And indeed he had, and as we introduced ourselves in the bask of how random and cool of an encounter this was, he turns to his girlfriend as says "this guy was drawing all the way home. He's great."

I hadn't thought of this sketchbook as one to share, but after such a radical compliment from beyond nowhere was on the table, I felt compelled...
